Monon South Freedom Trail
Indiana Govenor Eric Holcomb announced during his 2023 State of the State event that the Indiana Department of Natural Resources would award $29.5 million to construct a 62.3-mile recreational trail called the Monon South Freedom Trail. The Monon South Freedom Trail is part of the State of Indiana's Next Level Trails Program Initiative.
When completed, the bicycling and walking trail will be the longest contiguous recreational trail in Indiana. The new trail will stretch through 5 Indiana counties (Clark, Floyd, Lawrence, Orange, and Washington), and connect nine Indiana towns and cities (Bedford, Mitchell, Saltillo, Campbellsburg, Salem, New Pekin, Borden, Orleans, and New Albany).
The trail will begin with the route of the original New Albany - Salem Railroad which was organized in 1847 and the full route of the railroad was later renamed as the Monon Railway.
New Albany will own and manage the portion of the trail in Floyd County. Radius Indiana will be responsible for the trail in Clark, Washington, Orange and Lawrence Counties.
The Blue River Quaker Settlement looks forward to sharing the story of the abolitionist Quakers and the activities of the underground railroad with travelers along the South Monon Freedom Trail in the future.
