Morgan’s Raiders in Hobb's Grove
The arrival of General Morgan’s Raiders on July 10th 1863 in Hobb’s Grove was certainly alarming to Mrs. Hobbs, her eldest daughter and the youngest child who were home at the time (Dr. Hobbs and his sons being away at other duties). A number of Morgan’s Raiders took advantage of the shade of the grove of large trees to take a rest on their hurried dash through Southern Indiana. The Raiders stay in Hobb’s Grove was brief, much to the relief of the Hobb's family and the Home Guards.Old Settlers Days began in Hobb's Grove

Agricultural fairs contributed significantly to the dynamics of American rural life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Grangers' Picnics, as they were called, combined commerce, entertainment, agricultural education, politics, and social opportunities to those who attended. The rise of Grangers' Picnics and their evolution reflect the changing state of rural life, the effects of the transportation revolution, and the desire to modernize both farming methods and living conditions in rural and small town America. Its commitment was to progress both individuals and society in general. The Grangers' Picnic in August of 1896 in Hobb's Grove was under the auspices of the Washington County Farmers' Institute and was attended by several thousand guests including Indiana Governor Matthews and Indiana Senator James A. Mount. For the special event excursion trains ran at half fare from New Albany and Bloomington. The following was quoted for event in the local newspaper advertising "The Grangers want every man, woman and child, who feels proud of our peerless county and anxious to aid in extending her fame for hospitality, to attend and contribute all in their power to the pleasure of the host of distinguished visitors who will honor the occasion with their presence."Listing Details
